How to read a contract clause

Contracts hide their teeth in the wording. A single clause can decide who owns your work, who pays if something goes wrong, and how hard it is to walk away. Three questions cut through most of it:

  • What does it actually require? Strip out the legal phrasing and say it as a plain instruction: “I have to…” or “They can…”.
  • Who does it protect? Most risky clauses protect one side only. If every obligation lands on you and every right on them, that’s a red flag.
  • What’s the worst case? Ask what happens if things go badly — is there a cap on what you could owe, or a way out?

The explainer above answers all three for a single clause. When you’re ready, the full PlainClause review reads your entire contract, finds every red flag, tells you what’s missing, and gives you specific things to negotiate.
